What is Midcentury Modern design? American designs featured Modern, futuristic looks. Although some recognize Midcentury Modern design as a period beginning as early as the 1930’s. Most agree the sweet spot for this iconic style in America was the 50’s and 60’s and was influenced by German Bauhaus design of the 20’s and 30’s and the clean lines of the Danish Modernist movement of the 40’s through 60’s.
Hallmarks of Midcentury Modern furniture design included clean lines, organic and geometric shapes, futuristic – yet relatively simple – designs with a lack of extraneous embellishments. Midcentury home architecture often features integration with nature, large windows and open floor plans allowing for plenty of natural light to enter the home.
In the 1980’s and ‘90’s Midcentury Modern experienced a resurgence as consumers and collectors alike clamored for vintage pieces – often at very steep prices. Well-made yet less pricey reproductions also emerged. Some companies even reissued original designs, such as Herman Miller under the line Herman Miller for the Home. And once reissued pieces became available directly to the consumer, it was clear Midcentury Modern wasn’t going anywhere.
